Best Cars for Teen Drivers – and their worried parents

Worried parents of teen drivers can relax – we’re presenting you with the list of the IIHS top picks for safest affordable used cars for new drivers.

Most families choose a pre-owned vehicle for their teens’ first ride. This is a wise choice – not only can purchasing a pre-owned cost less than buying new, they’ll often have lower insurance rates as well.

The dilemma for parents is in what vehicle they should choose. Should you let your teen decide what they want? Should you focus exclusively on price? What about safety features? Luckily, the IIHS publishes an annual list of the safest picks for teen drivers, which features cars cool enough your teen will want them and cars with enough safety features to keep parents calm and keep insurance costs in check. The best part of this list is that it features vehicles in a very wide price range – from $3,700 to $20,000 – so nearly every family’s budget can be met.

The IIHS has two classifications for vehicle safety picks (Best and Good). “Best” vehicles must have earned good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. All vehicles must be equipped with ESC (electronic stability control) to be featured on the list. ESC helps new drivers to maintain control of vehicles in wet or slippery conditions. It’s important to note that the prices shown for each vehicle are average prices for vehicles in good condition for the earliest year shown in the table as calculated by Kelly Blue Book in 2018 and do not represent the asking price for the vehicle(s) for sale at SVG. For example, the $6600 price shown for the Volkswagen Passat is an average 2013 Passat asking price when buying from a private seller, with no warranty. A newer Passat in excellent condition with a warranty will cost more. Cars on the “Best” list typically have higher prices than those on the “Good” list (up to around $20,000).

SVG Motors has vehicles from both lists available right now. Parents will be happy to know that when they purchase a pre-owned vehicle at SVG, their child will receive 3 years of free oil changes, a 3-month/3,000 mile warranty, one year of free paintless dent repair, and a full 7 days to love it or return it. The Superior Value Guarantee is available on every single vehicle at SVG Motors and it’s so much more than free oil changes. To see all of the real, tangible benefits of the guarantee, click here.
